Divinities - The Show

Objective: Design and host a one-night experiential showcase for and by the community in Austin.

Involvement: Creative Direction, Event Planning, Collateral and Wayfinding Design,

Sponsored by: Gem and Bolt Mezcal, Titos Vodka, Hops & Grain, Goodnight Loving, Holland Photo Lab, and WhenWhereWhat Austin

Encompassing a year of photography, film, and dialogue, this showcase aimed to be create an open space for all to come, celebrate, and have a conversation around religion and claim space.

Given Divinities religious themes we decided to host the event at a local church, Vesper, letting their various spaces to inform their use. The entry foyer acting as a recieving zone to then filter visitors into the Book Room, where they sit among religious texts to view our film before being drawn through a narrow hallway filled with tall grass and ambient sound before spilling out into the Nave - where the main event takes place. This moment played a vital role in how the night was experienced, creating a tension within compression and release as well as moving from a small dark space into a large well lit space full of action analogous to giving birth. Once in the main space, the DJ’s, Joaquin and 9th Sage as the duo Kiss of Life, play from the altar while the imagery flanks the walls - allowing viewers to “come to church” by way of music and art before having their portraits taken among a custom backdrop by Rex Hamilton celebrating the divinity within themselves.

A compilation of the images in show as well as others can be found here while event recap and collateral can be found below.
